Understanding the CanG

On April 1st, 2024, Germany rewrote history. Here is precisely what you need to know to stay legally compliant while enjoying cannabis in Hesse's largest city.

01

Possess & Grow

Adults are legally permitted to carry up to 25 grams of dried flowers in public. Within your private residence, the limit is 50 grams.

Home cultivation is encouraged: you may grow up to three female plants per adult household, provided the harvest is secured.

02

Social Clubs

The core of the legal supply chain. Anbauvereinigungen (Cannabis Social Clubs) are highly regulated, non-profit associations limited to 500 members. Members collectively grow and share cannabis without commercial intent.

Strict Prohibitions

Commercial sales do not exist. There are no dispensaries. Buying from street dealers in the Bahnhofsviertel remains a serious crime.

Furthermore, street cannabis is heavily contaminated with highly dangerous synthetic cannabinoids. Avoid the black market at all costs.

No Tourist Sales

The law was crafted to prevent "weed tourism." You cannot simply arrive at FRA airport and buy cannabis. Membership in Social Clubs is strictly reserved for individuals who have been registered residents of Germany for at least 6 months.

Consumption Zones

Public smoking is legal, but severely restricted. It is strictly prohibited within 100 meters (line of sight) of schools, playgrounds, and youth centers. Pedestrian shopping streets like the Zeil are also off-limits from 07:00 to 20:00.

Driving Limits

The legal driving limit is exceptionally low (3.5 ng/ml). If you consume, utilize Frankfurt's comprehensive public transit network (RMV) or take a taxi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to your most pressing questions.

1. Is weed completely legal in Frankfurt now? +
It is decriminalized and partially legalized for adults. You can possess up to 25g in public and grow at home, but commercial buying and selling remain strictly forbidden.
2. Can tourists buy weed in Frankfurt? +
No. The CanG law explicitly forbids tourist sales to prevent drug tourism. Only residents of Germany (who have lived here for over 6 months) can legally join Social Clubs to obtain cannabis.
3. Can I take cannabis on a flight from Frankfurt Airport (FRA)? +
Absolutely not. While domestic train travel with up to 25g is legal, crossing any international border (including flights within the Schengen zone) with cannabis is considered international drug smuggling.
4. What is a Cannabis Social Club (CSC)? +
CSCs are strictly regulated, non-profit associations limited to 500 members. Members collectively fund the cultivation of cannabis and share the harvest at cost price. They are not commercial shops.
5. Where can I legally smoke in Frankfurt? +
You can smoke in most public areas, except within a 100-meter line of sight from schools, kindergartens, playgrounds, and youth centers. Smoking in pedestrian zones (like the Zeil) is also illegal between 07:00 and 20:00.
6. Are cannabis edibles legal in Germany? +
Currently, the commercial production and distribution of cannabis edibles (such as gummies, brownies, or beverages) is strictly prohibited under the new law. Social clubs only distribute dried flowers or hashish.
7. How do I avoid synthetic weed in Frankfurt? +
Never buy from street dealers, particularly in the Bahnhofsviertel area. A vast majority of street cannabis is laced with highly dangerous synthetic cannabinoids. The only safe way is growing your own or joining a CSC.
8. Can expats or international students join a Social Club? +
Yes, provided you have officially registered your residence (Anmeldung) in Germany and have been living in the country for a minimum of six months.
9. Where can I buy seeds? +
It is 100% legal to purchase seeds online from other European Union countries (like Spain or Austria) and have them shipped directly to your Frankfurt address for home cultivation.
10. Why should I join the Frankfurt Telegram community? +
Our Telegram and WhatsApp networks are safe spaces for Frankfurt residents to discuss local Social Clubs, share home-growing tips, and stay updated on the ever-evolving legal landscape without the risks of the black market.
